Jan Gruen specializes in real estate litigation for commercial clients, home builders, residential clients and businesses in the areas of leasing disputes, contracts, real estate, broker/agent issues, construction and insurance related matters.
Jan received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and her J.D. degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1987.
She has more than 30 years of litigation experience and expertise in day-to-day risk management, commercial disputes, leasing, unlawful detainer work, mechanics liens, large-scale construction defect claims, contractual issues, transactional work, contractor and subcontractor liability, loss recovery, warranty related matters, plaintiff personal injury claims and all forms of dispute resolution, including mediation, arbitration, civil trial act work, Calderon Act and SB 800 proceedings.
Jan has served as an Adjunct Professor at Hastings College of the Law teaching Settlement and Negotiation. Jan has been recognized by her peers as a California Super Lawyer for the last 16 years and most recently received recognition once again as one of the top 50 female attorneys in Northern California. She was recognized as a “2008 Woman of Distinction” by East Bay Business Times and received the 2007 and 2009 Chairman’s Award for her dedication and service to the Homebuilder’s Association of Northern California (now the BIANC). Jan served as 2011 president of the California Building Industry Association’s Professional Women in Building Council and has been a member of the CBIA’s Risk Management Legal Action and Member Services subcommittees. At a local level Jan has served on the Building Industry Association Bay Area, Regional Board, the Professional Women in Building local board and Homeaid, a non-profit dedicated to providing dignified housing to homeless women, men and children in transition. Finally, Jan has performed with and been president and a member of the board of the Peter Pan Foundation, a non-profit, dedicated to encouraging children of all ages to realize their full potential through musical theater while teaching the import of giving back to those less fortunate.
